Jun. 15th, 2014 05:46 pmAsuna is the character that changes the most in the manga 'Sword Art Online'. She starts out a normal girl -- a high school student with grades at the top of her class and the daughter of the former CEO of the company RECTO Inc. Then she becomes trapped in a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Mass Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game), a Death Game, where she becomes a distant and serious person while only focusing on beating it so she can go back home to her normal life. After two years in SAO with plenty of experiences, at the end Asuna learns to enjoy the game for what it is and the things she gained thanks to another player and her in-game husband, Kirito.
At the all-girls school Asuna attends back in the real world students look up to her. She is a kind, smart, beautiful, polite, and elegant girl who cares about others. That much hasn't changed about her. Her position as an upperclassman is something she carries from the real world into the virtual. Since she's accustomed to others idolizing her or looking to her for advice, she tends to act like a Big Sister to a lot of the female players in the game that are younger or the same age as her. Sometimes she adds affectionate nicknames or honorifics to others such as calling Kirito's sister, Leafa, Leafa-chan. Sinon is also a victim of this as Asuna chooses to call her Sinonon.
However, when it comes to the males she has a bit more trouble opening up to them as easily as she does with females. She's a bit more suspicious and weary. This is probably because she has two stalkers and multiple fanclubs in the game because she's so popular. While Asuna takes to being an idol well with other girls, being seen as an idol among males is not something she particularly enjoys or is used to. She was ranked the most popular in polls among the 6,000 players in the game because she is one of the rare Female Gamers in SAO and she is so beautiful. Though she dislikes this sort of attention from the male player base and has a hard time with it, she accepts it with grace. She's had to deal with confessions of love and when she thinks Kirito looks as if he is going to confess to her as well she delicately declines before he can say a word.
Almost everyone in SAO knows Asuna for either her beauty, her skill, or her position as sub-leader in the guild 'Knights of Blood' (KoB), the best guild in SAO. She's one of the top-level players and incredibly skilled. This top-level skill is gained from her smarts and her tendency to study to the point that she stays up at late hours. It's also gained by her determination to be strong and beat the game. While she started out crying for a week when it was announced SAO is her new reality, she decides she won't let herself rot away and decides to do everything she can to go back to the real world and that would be enough.
Being a top-level player, the sub-leader of the best guild, and an idol has to come with pride and confidence and it does. When Asuna wants something, she takes it. She managed to master the cooking skill and along with her excellent swordsmanship she is always proud when she accomplishes something. Because of this, Kirito regularly muses on how good her food is and how good she is with her sword. She's a bit of an emotional girl at that and sometimes lets those emotions guide her in outbursts of excitement or despair. She refuses to let people get hurt or die if there's something she can do about it and she's dashed in the middle of a boss fight to stop a stranger from getting killed. Asuna even hesitates to kill the PK'ers (Player Killers: those who kill other players) that exist in the world for this reason.
Before SAO, Asuna had never played an VRMMORPG or any sort of MMO. Despite that, she rises above her limitations and excels as a player. She has a strong heart and the will to move forward even though she has admitted she doesn't believe she is strong. Kirito is the person she believes is the strongest. He is the most important person to her, her in-game husband, and the person that changed Asuna from only wanting to beat SAO, become a powerhouse, to actually enjoying the game for what it is. That is the reason Asuna is entirely devoted to him to the point that she will protect him with her life. He's also the person she argues with the most and manages to work up her bad temper enough that she gets physical. Hurting or insulting people she cares out (namely Kirito) is the quickest way to get on her bad side and bring abut her past serious and cold self. Or invading her privacy.
-teasing, silly
-loving
-upbeat/friendly
-honest
-likes baths and cooking
-lonely deep down (no friends during school) needs kirito
-not fearless, scared of nightmares and bosses
-strict
-competitive
-girly, materialistic, likes nice things (probably from being rich)
Fencing: Asuna's weapon of choice is a rapier and it's perfect for her. Her attack style is focused on accuracy and striking at critical points with it. Even if her rapier isn't terribly powerful, her style makes up for it. The tip of her sword moves so quickly that Kirito compares it to that of a meteor.
Speed: She's so fast with her rapier that she's earned the title 'The Flash' among her peers in SAO in withing her guild KoB. It's canon that her speed is so incredible that it has basically broken the system and exceeded the limitations it has set. She's able to cross a 5km distance in five minutes compared to the normal hour.
